SECOND LIFE - MEINIR GWILYM MAKES VIRTUAL HISTORY
Meinir Gwilym, the popular singer-songwriter from Anglesey, North Wales,
will make rock’n’roll history next month when she plays the first ever
Welsh language gig in Second Life, the virtual world with 12 million members.
Meinir is teaming up with multimedia company CC4, one of the country’s
top Second Life developers.
Second Life is a internet-based 3D environment. Users log on and create a
visual character called an avatar, which represents themselves on screen.
Many people see Second life as a prototype for the next stage of the web.
CC4 have been developing projects for some time, partnering organisations
such as Snowdonia National Park Authority, and Y Galeri Theatre in Caernarfon.
Meinir will be playing the gig live from CC4’s studios in Y Felinheli on March 7th,
and it will be webcast into Second Life and across the world . The gig will take
place at Taff’s Bar, a popular venue run by CC4 Director, Phil Stead, on his
virtual island, called Cymru. Meinir will appear on stage represented by her a
vatar called Alaw Llewellyn.
Phil is sure the gig will be a success. “We’ve been running live events for
some time now, and they are always very popular. We have a global audience,
and mosts gigs attract between 100-150 people. They attend the virtual gig via
their avatars, and then play the concert at home through their PC speakers. This
is a perfect way for Meinir to broaden her appeal and reach a new audience.“
Meinir is very excited about the idea. “I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve
seen a gig in Second Life and it was really good. I wasn’t sure what to expect but
rehearsals have been great fun. It’s becoming a more and more popular way of perfoming.
People like Suzanne Vega and The Pet Shop Boys have played in-world, and it’s a real
thrill for me to be able to do the first ever Welsh Language gig.”
