1950's Singing Lions
Multiple Award nominated, Feature length DVD Documentary and
CD Rom boxed set telling the amazing story of the 1950
“Singing” British Lions…..
Just in case it wasn’t entirely self evident, we quite like
our sport here at CC4. So when Graeme Roberts, son of the
late Vic Roberts (Proud Cornishman, England and Lions
representative, and former captain of Swansea RFC)
approached us about making a CD Rom about his father’s Lions
Tour, it’s fair to say that the deal was done before you
could….sing a whole verse of “Sloop John B”.
What a privilege it was to work on this project – the
working title was “Gentlemen of Substance”, because this
indeed what every one of the surviving Lions we interviewed
for the DVD was then, and still is now. This was a tour
undertaken for Sport’s sake, and the sacrifices that many of
the Lions had to make is finally recorded in posterity on
the DVD. Their appreciation of the hospitality of their Kiwi
hosts is also abundant, as is the obvious camaraderie and
lifetime friendships which developed over the course of the
tour.
They were known as the “Singing Lions” because…they sang a
lot, as a choir, wherever they went. So impressed were the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation by their musical prowess
that a record was cut – and imagine our delight when Lewis
Jones, Llanelli, Wales, Lions and Rugby League legend,
turned up to do his interview with his original copy of the
record under his arm. “Is this any good ?” he asked. Judge
for yourself- we managed to digitize the record, which
includes 18 tracks, and we put it on the CD – along with
some unique 55 year old “home movies” taken by some of the
players on the tour, and every statistic the rugby anorak
could dream of.
We hope that some of the sheer pleasure and privilege we had
in making this product ooze from every pixel of this product
!
